The F-word

From Dictionary.com:

fop

[fop]

noun
1. a man who is excessively vain and concerned about his dress, appearance, and manners.

Does that sound like Raoul? I don't think so.

Why do Raoul's haters insist on calling him a fop? And how did Raoul get labeled a fop in the first place?

Well, after reading through a lot of archived fan discussion (see Not a Fop! from 2005, for example, or What makes Raoul a fop? from the same site in 2006), the answer seems to be that even in those days nobody really remembered where the term originated. Various people admit that they first picked it up from reading fan-fiction (and/or that they know perfectly well that Raoul is not a fop, but find it great fun to use the term!)

Quote:
If people were making fun of a flaw Raoul actually had, it'd be a lot less annoying. I don't think any Raoul fans have a problem with people teasing him for being headstrong and emotional, because it's true and it is funny when you exaggerate it and make him barrel blindly into danger all the time. The damn 'fop' thing is just so out-of-left-field and OOC that it's annoying.
Imagine if 95% of the phans you talked to were completely convinced that Erik was a flamboyantly gay transvestite, and were constantly ragging on him for it and you'll get an idea of just how annoying.

Hear, hear!
