Love or hate the 2004 movie, you've probably wondered at some point what was up with Patrick Wilson's hair. The long hair isn't in the novel, and it's not a carry-over from the stage show, so where did it come from?

I don't know the answer to that. For a long time, I couldn't even make an educated guess. Then, out of the blue, it hit me.

Errol Flynn wore his hair long in Captain Blood, and again in The Adventures of Robin Hood. So did Gene Kelly in The Three Musketeers and Mandy Patinkin in The Princess Bride.

That's my theory. Raoul's long hair was a side effect of the filmmakers turning him into a dashing action hero with a sword.

It sounds plausible; they could well have been trying to tap into that subconscious stereotype (although I still suspect they simply thought it made him look 'aristocratic').
