I hate it when I'm reading a nice, fluffy R/C fic (or any kind of R/C fic, really) where Raoul and Christine are happily married and have a kid...and then it's revealed that the child is not Raoul's, but Erik's.

Why force Raoul to raise another man's child? Is he not allowed to have children of his own? When the hell would Erik and Christine have had sex in the first place?

I hate this cliche and it should die before it ruins any more good fanfics for me. That's all.

This is one reason why people called "Love Never Dies" a collection of fanfic clichés that were already old back in the 1990s...

I think the reason for doing it is the feeling that it would be nice if Erik left some kind of descendant, and/or the feeling that Erik has 'first rights' over Christine (Raoul can always go on to father other children on her afterwards but Erik only gets a brief window of opportunity) and/or the feeling that this is a way for fans to have their cake and eat it with everyone united in one big happy family. And of course for the Kay-verse it's canon (which means this idea wasn't exactly new even back then!)

One of EMK81's fanfics attempts to subvert this by having Erik come up with a plan to get Raoul to father a child on Christine for him and then retain her underground as his 'wife' -- the idea being that this way Christine will get a pretty child as opposed to Erik's deformed offspring :-p Unfortunately Christine and Raoul don't realise what he is up to and then are horrified at the suggestion when they find out!
